From an interview on World Service the other day they were saying that the size of break needed for this is not practcal as the airborne hot ash and detritus is setting new fires several miles away due to the high winds.

I suppose if you could somehow put up a curtain of water and then make sure nothing got over it you might get somewhere, but the fact is the large front of the fire will just go around it. This is what happens when nobody manages the land of course. The tar sands around those places do not help either.

Don't they log the trees?

It will stop when it runs out of fuel, for example if the wind reverses direction.
