Builing Control for combis?

I am considering installing a combi with an integrated unvented cylinder. Reading bits on this group leads me to believe that all I need do is contact Building Control at the council, then fit it. A combi has all the controls and safety aspects inside the case so no setting up by the installer.

Am I right? Do the council charge for this, and if so by how much?

All pretty confusing.

thanks

I investigated this a year or so back. I recall that, in the legislation, the competency test was somewhat more ambiguously worded for unvented cylinders than for other controlled tasks (such as gas fitting). I wasn't entirely sure that every building control department would interpret the rules to mean self installation is legal and whether an appeal against refusal would be accepted in court. You may wish to discuss with your local building control department as to whether they would accept a building control application from yourself, as I suspect that the local party line is what will prevail.

I assume that you are competent at gas fitting and you understand what all the safety features on an unvented system are for?

In the end, I installed a heatbank instead, as this can definitely and unambiguously be installed by the public.
