boiler thermostat setting

To roughly what temperature should a boiler thermostat be set? (Cast iron, floor standing)

With a non condensing, maximum.

Usually 82C. Setting it lower makes it more efficient, provided the radiators are big enough. However, if you set it too low, it can start condensing internally, leading to corrosion.

Thanks, it's only as a temporary measure so long term corrosion won't be a problem.

What I might do is add a cylinder/pipe thermostat to one of the pipes at the top of the heat exchanger.

So what sort of temperature is that?

The reason being the thermostat on the boiler has gone phut (Not switching off)

The only thermostat I can obtain with the same "bulb" is an industrial one that is calibrated in degrees C.

However, the original thermostat was just labelled 0-8!

What I want to check is that I don't set it way too high. I recon it should be between about 75 and 85 degrees C but need confirmation of that.

Assuming it's a non-condensing boiler, 80 degC is about right. [82 if you like, but no higher than that].
