I'm with you. For the sake of a little money, why not do it the correct way?
The days are long gone since far east PCBs came with extra holes in them for components that the designer had specified, but were found to not
*always* be needed...until your tranny started squealing on a warmer day
not just from the Far East. Grundig imported low quality voice recorders (which had one rate of duty) and added components to make them into "Audio Tape recorders" (which attracted a higher rate of duty - to protect UK Manufacturers)
0.22uF across the mains? No way! It's a 22nF for suppressing interference to everybody's MW radios. If you're callous you could cut it out completely.
I am happy to write that the machine is working properly again. Thanks for the link. And I have a spare, for when the one in the foot control fails. I'm only missing one of the screws that hold the plastic casing in place. It can do without that.
And I found the missing screw, by walking on it in socks.
