It seems that there are electric cars that have AM bands, but not all include it.

is that 'AM as in cockney for 'HAM' or do you mean Amplitude Modulation ? :-)

I have no idea if my 2009 non electric car has it. I simply have no use for it whatsoever

Incapable of anything approaching reasonable music reproduction,

What he means is long/medium wave. And maybe short wave commercial broadcasts. In the US that's 'AM'

I can't listen to it anywhere...

but plenty of atmosphere ...reproduction isn't everything

well try driving in some parts of the near of Scotland and it is all there is to listen to....DAB goes first then FM ......we need long wave

Interesting subject. I'd have thought most these days were dab and fm and sometimes even internet. Most cars can be surprised of course as its relatively easy for electric cars, but if you get stuck in some built up area in a car with AM and want to listen to anything, the noise from the general area makes it almost impossible. I know this having been a passenger many times.

The major car companies, have extensive product test, including emissions and susceptibility testing.

The band from 35MHz and up, is covered by a different standards doc, than 150KHz to 35Mhz. The lower band spec is "advisory".

They can't afford for the computers in the car to crash, due to the computers receiving emissions from the electric motors and the 150kW inverter drive for those motors.

And so the car companies are on your side, when it comes to emissions. They want the emissions to go away, just like you do.

And at least one car company executive, admitted "we're not a BEV company yet, and there are areas we need to improve". So even if the car you test drive today, fails your AM radio test, it might pass five years from now. The thing is, there are several motor types, and in some cars with multiple motors, the motors are not even the same type (one motor can be for highway, the other motor more for city driving).

The car industry had gone through bad eras before, such as when CDI came out for ignition. And when they were using the wrong kind of wires for the wire to the spark plugs. Today, even the spark plugs on ICE have been redesigned, for a better ignition effect (but likely, with no change to emissions).

try coming to Scotland without AM

Do CDs / Digital media files not work at that latitude?

easy as far north as Perth - done it.

AM goes further which is why the yanks still use it because of the distances involved

Andrew

Your problem, as always.

AM isnt long wave.
