Bayko Screwdriver ....

Sounds like a Shackleton Foden, an excellent choice, and very collectible today. Pre war models were wooden, die cast after the war. Large, too, compared to contemporary Dinky Toys, probably 1/24 or thereabouts. I had one once, and have always regretted selling it.

Looking at the advert in that link and one I was looking at for Bayko earlier the proportions of the toys to the size of the people around them looks a bit generous, possibly the ASA would step in now after a complaint. At least the lorry has the dimensions,14? long and 4? high. But look at Dad with his hand on the front ,he must be unusually small and at a pinch the boy should almost be able to ride on it. In the Bayko ad the constructed house compared to the children was almost as high as their waist.

I wonder many children were disappointed when they opened a wrapped present and discovered the actual size.

The nearest I got to this was when my Uncle gave me a Mamod traction Engine when I was around 8. Somewhere there was a a picture which showed a boy being pulled by one on a small cart which must have been done in laboratory conditions and an anorexic boy. Disappointment was short as a toy with boiling water, scalding steam ,skin burning surfaces which dripped burning meths all over the floor all wrapped up in a child friendly package was fun although Mother did not agree and henceforth use was banished to outside. But my dreams of replacing my bike with a traction engine and pram wheel trolley combination for some journeys had evaporated with the Meths.

Mine was blue. Bought it as part of a job lot of mainly old trains about 30 years ago, then sold the Shackleton for more than I had paid for the lot. Still regret selling it, though.

The handle is really comfortable to use in size and grip, and you can easily generate lots of force when required.
