B&Q turf

anyone used it ? been to our local store and they say it's going out as fast as it comes in... an indication of quality or just the price is low (£2.48 a sq yrd (0.89sq/m) ) ?

thanks

Hi Les

I think you have got your calculations wrong. £2.48 sq/yd is probably £1.89 sq/m (not 89p sq/m). It seems to be on the expensive side, as you have trawl throu your local paper and find grade A turf for £1.20 sq/m

I meant £2.48 a sq/yd or 0.89sq/m not 89p sq/m

I've asked around and most people have steered me away from local turf merchants (or whatever they're called), basically because it's mostly meadow turf around here... or so I've been told

Arrrrh! I re-read your initial post and it clicked into place (0.89 sq/m = 1 sq/yd). Sorry about that.

Then you should buy it by the sq.m. ;-)

When we went to buy some from the local B&Q a couple of years ago, they'd had to withdraw their stocks after finding it had been spiked with broken glass.

But isn't the problem with cheap turf that's it's often meadow turf? You'd hope that B&Q wouldn't stock that.

I saw someone buying it in B&Q last weekend. It looked dry and dead on the roll, not the lovely moist stuff you normally see. I would strongly recommend inspecting it very closely before purchase.

If buying myself (and I will be soon), I would buy from a specialist supplier who knows how to handle the product.

A quick internet quote from

formatting link
(I haven't used them or have any idea if they are any good) gives me 78.27 delivered for 24m2, which is 3.26/m2, or 2.90/yd2. This is for their "Stadium" grade turf. For "Aughton Green", the quote is 106.35, or 4.43/m2. The Stadium is the standard hard wearing stuff for general use. The Aughton Green is ornamental, so looks nicer but needs TLC.

I don't know if it is now standard practice but I had some laid a while back and I have since found that it is grown on netting. What a pain, it may assist the grower but not the gardener, slightest excuse and it wraps around the lawnmower.

So if there is an option go for un-netted.

You are meant to lay it green side up with the netting at the bottom :)

I have a feeling with the B&Q stuff both sides are the same colour :-p
