Axenence - NetTools/ email?

I downloaded this, as a means to ping our Smart Plugs, and report any permanent outages, rather than them remaining out of contact, until I happened to notice. As such, it works great, very configurable, just what was looking for, except....

The facility to send an email notification, when there is a ping failure. I just cannot get it to work! I've tried inserting my Outlook account details, Googlemail, Yahoo mail, I even set up a free mail.com email account - Assuming I get things set up correctly, they all report a 'Authentication credentials invalid' error, when clicking the 'Test email' button.

NetTools> Netwatch>Set Alerts> tick Send Mail> then Setup...

Could someone test it, and let me know if they can get the email facility to actually work please?

Perhaps you need to set up an 'app password' with your mail host? Gmail and probably others don't want you using your account password in other apps.

Look for 'SMTP settings' details at your mail host, which will have the procedure.

App passwords allow you to bypass the 2FA that using the "regular" password should trigger.

If you have a gMail account, you can fine tune permissions in the Cloud Console. Which I would heartily recommend if you are giving 3rd parties access to account functions.

+1 My email client had to use a App password for Gmail rather than my gmail account password. The App password is configured by logging into you Gmail account.

Shortcut to that here.

Google make that quite hard to find clicking around the "Manage your google account" options. I did read something about them discontinuing it, but it still works at present.

Yes, tried that, and tried three different email accounts - all result in authorisation errors.

I saw your screenshot on

GMail Server: smtp.gmail.com Port: 587 Username: {username} Password: {apppassword, no spaces} Encryption: TLS (or STARTTLS if an option)

If your mail provider offers a SSL encrypted service, that is port 465.

Given that you've tried various services with no luck, do you have some fancy outbound firewall appliance or gateway installed, or have an ISP that has locked down your outbound ports, or given you some Norton junk "security software" to install?

Email is tragically slow for this use case, I'd go for something that can post alerts to a messaging platform. Slack/Teams/Signal etc....

Not that I am aware of, I just have the default Windows 10 security in place.

That's not a problem at all, so long as I'm made aware of the ping failure, within 24 hours or so.

Note: App passwords can only be used with accounts that have 2-Step Verification turned on.

I use Pegasus mail and have the same settings as above but also a IMAP profile set up for Gmail

IMAP server address: imap.gmail.com Port: 993 Username : my gmail email address Password : 16 digit/character app password, no spaces Encryption: SSL
