Artex Ceiling Problems

I have an Artex ceiling in my living room and it is peeling away where (I think) the tape was used to seal the plasterboard joins. I am not sure it can be repaired without it being quite noticeable. Can Artex be removed or papered over or plastered over?

What are the recommendations of the group?

Thanks for your help.

Anything can be removed... what "pattern" is it? The problem with skimming over it is that if it's not firmly attached, the artex and skim may crack up. I wouldn't paper it. You are probably best getting it off (steamer/scraper) or renewing the ceiling (pull down plasterboard and replace, or overboard it).

I have successfully skimmed over stipple pattern artex in the past. However you would need to get shot of anything loose first. (I also knocked the peeks of the stipples with a trowel and gave it a quick PVA just before skimming).

Depends on whether you want to keep the textured ceiling. Getting shot of it is easy enough by skimming, or over boarding or even stripping. Repairing it in a way that is invisible may prove quite difficult.

How old is the Artex? The stuff put up in the 60's and 70's contains asbestos. Sanding it off is not recommended. Personally, I don't think the amount of asbestos represents a real risk unless you're really stupid (eg sanding it off without wearing a dust mask). It's your decision though.

Thanks for your suggestions, I don't mind what the final finish as long as it is decent and not patched up. It is a simple stipple on, I think, bare plasterboards, done about 17-20 years ago. My ideal finish is a normal skim plaster that I can paint.
