Anyone got an old laptop

Apr 05, 2013 23 Replies

I'm looking for a laptop with a camera and microphone for the MiL in Indonesia to use for skyping and emails. XP / Win 7 whatever, it doesn't need to be high spec

Anyone got such a beast lying around they don't want too much for?

Sorry, mine doesn't have a camera, and I'm still using it every day :-)

Same here, as its an old Toshiba which runs one specific program every day.

ditto. no cam fer sure. use it to read ebooks in bed and watch vidoes off the server..:-)

How abut this one? Basic spec but good make, brand new, with cam and microphone/speakers, and you know the battery will be ok. 200 quid.

Only drawback is that it comes with Win8

You'll be lucky. This area has quite an active FreeCycle group - and I can't remember ever seeing a modern laptop up for grabs. And by modern, I mean one with a built in camera.

Word on the street (okay, by 'street' I mean the ex-pat blogs) is that laptops are cheaper in Indonesia.

Hmmm - not what I've heard

I'll check

Can't see the webcam on that

And the tradein - has to be in full working order, unscratched, less than 4 years old, usw ...

I've already bought her a new laptop expecting the old one to go off to Indobnesia but she hates win8 and I'm buggered if that machine is going off to SE Asia

An android tablet like the aldi ones will do what you say she needs.

Blimey, most people would specifically choose a laptop without a camera for their mother in law.

I've got one of these things, hardly been used for years, bought a new charger for it a few weeks ago from ebay and it runs fine, although the battery won't hold a charge, it works perfectly running on mains.

It's just been reset to factory settings

It has a webcam and you'd need a headset with mic and you're good to go.

Was gonna put it on fleabay, they're going for about 80 - 100, so if you want it, it's yours, can do it through ebay if you're interested, let me know.

And according to that link, it has a built in microphone, but as I've never skyped or anything along those lines, I don't know anything about it.

Something like:

I've not seen this particular item with keyboard, but have had a play with what I think is the same tablet. The battery is small (there's loads of empty space inside), the screen isn't the best, but it's reasonably responsive and should do Skype+email OK. Above all it's small and light.

Does it need a *built-in* camera and mic? You can get a USB-based camera with built-in mic for about a fiver on Ebay - and even a fairly respectable Logitech one for about 20 quid.

Have a look at

Hmm, interesting. Have you tried them? According to the grading system most of them are grade C, which is basically scrap for parts only. Even grade B doesn't get you an OS or AC adaptor. Though one man's 'scrap' is another man's 'two minute fix'. (and one man's 'sold as seen' is another man's 'utterly trashed')
