Any GIMP users here?

Oh boy. Something's very wrong this end then, Andy. My GUI doesn't resemble yours in any way! I'll try to upload a picture of what I'm seeing later on and you'll see what I mean....

Which version of GIMP are you running?

maybe you've not ticked windows/single window mode?

ctrl-L should show the layers dock, if it's hidden.

Brilliant; thanks, Andy that's all working fine now. I now have the opacity slider and it's functioning as I would expect. My GIMP version is 2.8 and I can't believe it's *so* totally different looking from yours. All the stuff I needed was hidden by the ctrl-L key combo! Thanks again! :)

alpha is opacity

Well, it dindu nuffin for me. But the crt-L brought out the hidden settings I needed. I can't believe Andy's DUI is so different to mine. Looks like they've done a major facelift on it from my 2.8 version.

I think gimp refers to alpha as a channel of the image (along with r/g/b channels), but opacity applies of the whole layer.

Having used photoshop before, I enabled the single window mode (can't remember what version that arrived in) I don't think I did anything to enable the dark grey theme, but can't remember.

I've been trying to find the right button to take a screenshot to show you my GUI, but for obvious reasons I don't want to cycle through Fn+Fx up to a dozen times in the hope of finding it! Do you happen to know it? I'm using Debian if that makes any difference.

I use an app called 'take sceenshot' for that....

Linux supports it natively, though.

Prolly does through some magic key combo - but what does 'support it natively' mean? The screen itself is nowt to do with Linux.

You have to have a function like that built ino the window manager, so it might be a gnome or GTK function perhaps.., and what keys invoke it are window manager specific.

Viz on my systeme using MATE window manager:

"MATE has implemented the keyboard shortcuts of GNOME for screenshots; like taking a screenshot of the whole desktop with PRINT key, of the active window with Alt+Print. But another one is missing. Shift+Print for taking a screenshot of a selected region/area."

Since the latter is what I mostly use, it aint a lot of help

Far from it, actually, NP - it's worked a treat. I'd obviously forgotten about Fn+prtsc it's so rare I ever have to use it, but yeah, I even got the camera shutter sound effect to go with it, too. :) Thanks!

PrtSc works for me (Ubuntu/XFCE)

Simple. Take a print of the PCB to superimpose on a polyester film using conventional printer.

"Screenshot" is better as you can select area to capture/crop before saving Xubuntu/Xfce
