Amount of light needed in 1.8 metre square wet room?

Another question about our new shower/wet room. How much light do we need? It has enough daylight so the lighting will only be used when it's dark outside.

There will be one (somewhat off centre) ceiling light and we think a bulkhead type light on the wall furthest from the 'not in the centre' celing light. I think both lights should probably be about the same output but what sort of total lumens should we be looking at in a 1.8 metre by 1.8 metre shower room?

googling for "CIBSE recommended lux levels" should turn up some decent results (though probably not from CIBSE themselves without forking out)

Jim GM4DHJ ... was thinking very hard :

3.5w LED's in each here and more than adequate. I have the same 3.5w LED lamp in a much smaller pantry room, with lots of shelves and it is far from adequate. Many factors can affect how lighting adequacy is perceived.

with LEDs now so cheap and using so little power I advocate at least 2 sources of light in any room, including loos. But then I'm a firm believer that Sod's law will still apply to make any single LED fail at the most inconvenient time.

In old fashioned terms a 100w light would be plenty. Nailing it down more accurately only you can do, preferred lumens being a matter of taste.

When I moved to the current house, the previous owners had fitted one of those 3-bulb fittings that took 3 40-watt reflector bulbs, and it was useless, barely gave enough light to shave by, so in the bin it went. Now I just have a single woolies 60 watt bulb, circa 1991 and it still going strong.

I have a number of them scattered around the house, plus many more in the caravan, car and etc. I have never had a single one fail so far, perhaps I have been lucky?

I have around 6 or seven of the 3.5w ones in use, and about as many in stock as spares. Next time I buy any LED's I certainly will not bother buying spares.

Not much for general purposes; I have about 5 watt LED which is fine for most things.

However for teeth cleaning I use a small LED torch to see inside the crevices until I can get decent mirror lighting installed (left and right of the mirror - at the top is actually pretty useless).

one 50 watt halogen would be enough. So about 7W of LED?

Ive got a similar sized bathroom that simply has a 60" equiv.LED luminaire in the center

I bought the stack of 3.5w from that store which big chain store which closed some while ago (years?) - BHS(?) They were just the bare lamps in a big cardboard box, at 50p each, it would have been rude not to take advantage :-) I bought a few BC and SES, went home tested, then went back for more.

For something similar sized but with no window we aimed for a bit over

1000 lux and used these

A total of six, each rated at 621 lumens mounted in IP68 downlights

12v halogens being essential because mains halogens would only last a few weeks around here

I mostly use poundland ones...they are very good with only a few failures and no radio noise.....

+1

About 1000 lumens , 2 x 6W 600 lumen downlighters. Difficult to have too much light in a bathroom. Make sure they have decent beam angle.
