Air conditioning

Looking at the sleet showers outside, it's obviously time to start The Next Big Thing; installing a split air conditioner in our bedroom, to replace the monobloc which went "Bang!" (well, silence and darkness, actually) last year.

I've read the wiki article several times (for which thank you) and a number of other articles online, so what I'm after is a recommendation of what brand to buy, and where from. I'd as soon spend a bit more money and get something I've heard of, if possible, rather than an unknown Chinese clone.

The good news is I already have a bloody great hole through the wall that I drilled for the monobloc's exhaust, so running the pipes and wires to the external unit should be relatively easy.

My factories had Diakin air conditioners. Although they were full air conditioning systems, rather than split air conditioners, I found them reliable and effective.

OOI, how do you define "full air conditioning" - given that I thought those typically were "split" AC system (i.e. not monoblock)?

Diakin and Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu seem to do lots of kit... In fact probably Samsung as well just for Huge! ;-)

I found there is a bit of a closed shop attitude with AC suppliers. Not many seemed very forthcoming when not talking to the trade. Although there are more suppliers of "easy fit" pre-gassed systems now, so that may have changed somewhat.

Full air conditioning = both humidity and temperature control. Air conditioning system = central air handling unit, distributing air through ducts to multiple points, recirculating the air through more ducts and with a controlled fresh air make-up.

While, technically, that is a split system, to me that terms more usually implies two linked stand alone units that typically serve a single room.

What about air cleaning and deionising as well? Brian

I would expect air filtration to ba a standard item in any system. I never saw any that offered deionising.

Some differentiate between split and "multi split" (i.e. multiple air handlers connected to one external unit). Ducted systems are another step on I suppose.

This info is probably too old to be useful now, but I installed a couple of self-fit split unit air conditioners from B&Q 13 years ago. They are labelled AirForce. One is still working fine and has never needed topping up. The other worked for ~8 years until some builders damaged it.

Thanks, yes, I came across your previous postings about this during my copious googlings.

ATM, I'm thinking about one of the monoblocs with twin air "vents". They look much easier to install and I already have one of the holes through the wall.

Monoblocks usually make much more noise in the room though...

Yes. That's one of the "cons".

You wouldn't hear it above the huge noise.
