Acrylic Paint on traditional house

This is what Dulux have to say :-

Cobb- Cobb is clay and straw mixed by a horse; certain special additives (some from the horse!) aid the mix. Cobb and similar constructions could be paintable but only in certain circumstances. Cobb walls will have a high plinth and the building will have wide soffits to prevent the walls getting wet. The walls need to breathe and must be decorated with permeable coatings. Limewashes are preferred but conventional coatings may be considered. A specialist Cobb builder will be able to advise.

Its unsuitable because it doesnt allow the cob to dry out. Wet cob is a recipe for collapse. It woudl be wise to remove it and use a porous lime based paint. Always check cob isnt cement rendered when buying, surveyors are not always familiar with the issues that come with cob. Cement renderd cob is a serious problem combination that can cause buildings to collapse.

The building was also lucky in that it was restored rather than the ministers preferred route of demolition and rebuilding.

There is a good booklet about how to deal with cob which is written by Jill Smallcombe [1] who lives in Somerset/Devon. She might be worth calling in as a consultant - as you haven't bought the house yet maybe you can get the vendor to pay for her advice
