Yup, the cable is only good for 27A at best usually.

Yes, that is what they were made for. The rating of joint boxes and connectors is only a guide to the sizes of cables which will fit in them, rather than an absolute rating.
When you consider how most electrical junction boxes are constructed the concept of a current rating for them is silly. The terminals merely make a firm mechanical contact between the cables to be joined: but no current flows in the actual terminal. Such terminals should be rated by the size of cable they can join not by the amount of current.
