Check connetions and dust first

Dust should always be cleaned off as it will retain heat...however unless you are in a machine shop where there would be metallic dust,, the dust in your home is non-conductive. The problem more than likely was a poor connection due to tarnish.

Nutone 3080 copper range hood...its from the 50s!

NuTone, great units, Slide off the bottom plate [if you can its greased shut] , pull the pins and lower the motor and clean and oil the ports that have never been oiled for 50 years, you might get it free enough to run. Contact Nutone for your parts.

DVD regions

Last time (only time) I bought a DVD player, it was sold as "region free". I'm pretty sure it was some other model rebadged, as the manual looked "reprinted" and had an additional card explaining the Vulcan nerve pinch sequence on the remote to disable region-locking.

How to stop the boiler piddling?

The difficulty was getting it to transfer to the wall of the standpipe rather than just shooting off the end of the drain pipe and free falling the rest of the way. The boiler dumps quite a lot at a time. It has a siphon thing to batch it up.

But that higher content makes then both a "dust magnet", which requires a dust free environment. Either that, or you're going to be doing a lot of sanding in between coats.
