I've seen people leave the hinges on and attach them to a cleat on the shop wall. Add gate legs, and it's a fold-away bench.

make friends with a cabinet shop owner. you'll get truckloads of scraps. small pieces, but nice stuff, once you sort out the mdf and melamine. Bridger
I have a pile handy in my shop also, all the way up to cinder block size.
Another option is to see if you have a cabinet shop around and see what they would charge you to run through their large sander. Alan
