How accurate should wood-working squares be?

For £15 I'd send it back and go visit your local tool shop, check before you buy. Even if you can work with the Screwfix thing it's shortcomings will annoy you every time you use it. Rgds Noel noel dot hegan @ virgin dot net

Maybe OT - cutting granite

I'd be inclined to visit a local headstone shop, but if the angle grinder idea has appeal, then something like the fifth and sixth photos from the top at http://www.iedu.com/DeSoto/Projects/JBot/might work as a holder to run along a straight edge.

Vegan children have stunted growth

You should visit some of these crofts and you might be amazed how far you have to drive your diesel vehicle to get there, and how far they have to drive to get to a 'shop'. Please explain how so-called 'rewilding' pays the bills ?

Go and visit a locksmith. They rarely inhabit places called security centers, but more often have a tatty little shop in a back street, where you will find locks you never knew existed and get professional advice that will suit your specific circumstances. Colin Bignell

Real machine shop tools, decent prices. Local machine shop and some friends are very big fans of their offerings and rate them a step above Grizzly. On line catalog at www.use-enco. There has been free shipping on some machines lately. Joe

OT - The Work Van

Last time I looked at this you were allowed private use within the tax-free perk as long as it was incidental, such as going for lunch etc. But it could not be used for an evening shop. So a shop at lunchtime at the same time as a meal break would probably be ok.

help! rebuilding saw

These "roll pins" are often supplied in kits. The 30 sizes range from 1/16" dia by 3/16" long to 3/8" dia by 2" long. Your local machine shop supply or Princess Auto in Canada carries this stuff. They are springy enough that you don't need metric. Ted Piercy

T1-11 generator enclosure project

Since it's 40' from the house, not bad at all, but intolerable in the shop. Probably should have made it free-standing - the whole building 'hums'.

Your local gun shop should offer a "free replacement barrel" with every (over-priced) weapon sold. Or, alternatively, "Replacement used barrels: Ten dollars ($90 core charge)".
