The belt sander replacements are breaking at the seam when replaced? Why?

We have a craftsman 3" belt sander which we just bought used. We are trying to put a new belt on it but they keep breaking at the seam. The belts are brand new, any suggestions?

New Belts doesn't mean good belts. Cheap belts very commonly split very quickly. Only use higher quality aluminum oxide or even zirconia belts. They last much longer, stretch less and rarely split. Once you get belts that work, then you'll want to pick up a cleaning block and refresh the belts back to new after each use
