Is it normal for my kitchen drain stub-out to be this high?

I’ve been living with this double-basin setup for a few years and it mostly works, but I can’t shake the feeling that the layout is a bit off. The main issue is that the drain stub-out coming from the wall seems way higher than it shold be. becasue of that, the P-trap sits at a relly awkward angle and the horizontal waste arm barely has any slope to it. I had to swap out some slip joint washers recently because of a slow drip, and it made me take a closer look at how everythign connects at the T-junction. It feels like the water has to work too hard just to get out of the pipes. If I need to move that wall connection down to get a better flow, is that a massive project for someone who isn't a pro? I'm pretty good with a wrench and basic DIY, but cutting into the wall to lower a drain pipe feels like a whole diffrent level of stress. I just don't want to end up with a major backup because I ignored a bad installation.


The height of the drain stub-out in the wall is the most common reason for kitchen sink drainage issues, expecially if you've recently upgraded to a deeper basin or added a garbage disposal. If the horizontal waste arm connecting the trap to the wall doesn't have at least a **quarter-inch per foot** of downward slope, you’re going to deal with standing water in the bottom of the trap and constant gunk buildup.

You can probably get by without moving the wall connection if you reconfigure the layout of the continuous waste pipes. Most people default to a center-drain T-junction, but switching to an **end-outlet tee** setup might give you back an inch or two of vertical clearance. By putting the P-trap directly under one sink and piping the other sink over into it, you eliminate that awkward middle meeting point that usally forces the trap lower than it needs to be. Lowering the actual drain pipe inside the wall isn't necessarily a nightmare, but it is a messy project. You'd have to cut out the back of the cabinet, saw into the stud-bay, and cut the vertical stack to install a new sanitary tee at a lower point. For a DIYer, the hardest part is usually the transition between old and new piping, especially if you have older galvanized steel lines instead of PVC. Before you start tearing into the drywall, check if you can use a low-profile P-trap or a shorter tailpiece on the sink strainers. If the water is currently draining and not backing up into the basins, it's technically functional, even if it's ugly. But if you see water sitting in the horizontal arm every time you take it apart, that's a sign that the wall port is just too high for the depth of your current sinks.

If you're running a deep Elkay or Kohler sink with a standard Badger 5, you're doomed. Those Badger units have a low discharge port. Swap it for an InSinkErator Evolution Compact; the outlet sits significantly higher and ussually solves the pitch issue without opening the wall. Also, make sure you're using a real 1-1/2 inch Oatey directional baffle tee, not some generic thin-wall junk. If you do end up cutting the wall, grab a couple of Fernco Proflex 3000 shielded couplings to tie back into the stack. It’ll keep the alignment rigid so you don't end up with another saggy waste arm in two years.

I ran into the same thing when I put in my deep farmhouse sink. I fought with it for months before I finally bit the bullet and cut the wall open. Honestly, it wasn't as bad as I feared. I used a oscillating multi-tool to make a clean square cut in the cabinet back and drywall. Once I coud see the pipe, I just used a Fernco coupling to drop the sanitary tee down four inches. It took me a Saturday afternoon, but now it actualy drains fast and I haven't had to touch a plunger since. If you're handy with a wrench, you can defintely handle the PVC work.

Ugh, I've been there. Don't forget to double-check your tailpiece length before you start rippin' out studs. I've seen guys cut 'em way longer than they need to be, wich pushes the whole assembly down and kills your slope. If you can trim an inch off those sink tailpieces, you might just squeeze out enought room to get that quarter-inch pitch. Also, if you're stuck with a high wall drain, stay away from those accordion-style flexible drain pipes. They're total gunk magnets and'll just make your drainage problems ten times worse. Keep it rigid PVC and keep it short as ya can.

If you're still fighting that high stub-out, look into the Dearborn Brass Low Profile P-Trap. It’s a lifesaver when you’re cramped for vertical space becasue the J-bend is specifically engineered to sit tighter to the tailpiece than your standard hardware store kit. It might give you just enugh clearance to get that slope back without having to saw into your cabinet. Also, ditch those cheap plastic washers and pick up a pack of Blue Monster Compression Seal Tape to wrap the threads. It’s way better for preventing those slow drips on the slip joints when the alignment isn't 100% perfect.
