How do I stop extreme water hammering in my new laundry room?

We moved into our new place about a year ago and the water hammer whenever the washing machine runs is getting ridiculous. Every time the valves shut off, it sounds like someone is hitting the studs with a sledgehammer. The builder keeps telling us it's just standard "new house settling" or some other nonsense, but I'm pretty sure pipes aren't supposed to jump that much. I saw the rough-in before the drywall went up and it's all PEX with those standard plastic outlet boxes. There aren't any actual arrestors installed on the lines though, which I thougth was standard practice these days. Does the length of the PEX run or how it's strapped to the studs make a difference here? The banging is so loud it acutally vibrates the wall in the next room over. Should I just buy those screw-on arrestors for the back of the washer, or is this a sign that somethig is actually loose inside the wall? I really don't want to start cutting into the brand new drywall if I can avoid it, but the builder is being totally useless. Any advice on what to check first would be great.

What you’re hearing is the shockwave from the washing machine’s solenoid valves snapping shut instantly. Since you didn't see arrestors during the rough-in, that’s your smoking gun. In many jurisdictions under the **Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC)**, hammer arrestors are mandatory for any fast-closing valve, wich includes washers, dishwashers, and ice makers.

PEX is actualy more forgiving than copper becasue it can expand slightly, but it also has a tendency to "whip" if it isn't secured properly. If the builder didn't use enugh plastic insulators or clamps where the pipe passes through the studs, that PEX is just banging against the wood every time the water stops. Before you start cutting into your drywall, definatly grab a pair of those **AA-size screw-on arrestors**. They thread right onto the back of the washer where the hoses connect. It’s a five-minute fix that solves the problem 90% of the time. If you install those and still hear a thud, your static water pressure might be way too high. You should pick up a cheap pressure gauge and check a hose bib. If you’re seeing anything over 75 or 80 PSI, your **Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV)** might need adjustment or replacement. High pressure makes hammer significantly worse and eventually trashes your appliance valves.

Is that pressure gauge somethig I can just pick up at a local hardware store? I’ve noticed our kitchen faucet splashes like crazy lately, so maybe our PSI realy is too high. Also, if I go with those screw-on arrestors, do they ever wear out or lose thier air pocket? I’d hate to think I fixed it only to have that terrifying banging sound start up again in a few months.

You can grab a pressure gauge for ten bucks at any hardware store. Just thread it onto your outdoor spigot. If your faucet is splashing like crazy, you're defintely running too hot on the PSI—anything over 80 is asking for trouble. As for the arrestors wearing out, the modern ones use a sealed piston rather than just an air pocket, so they don't waterlog like the old-fashioned pipe stubs used to. They'll last a good while, usually years. Also, check your water heater's expansion tank. If that's failed or waterlogged, your pressure will spike every time the heater kicks on, making the hammer way worse.
