Do I need brackets for an 8 foot run of PEX?

So we just opened up this massive void under our stairs while doing some home repairs and decided to turn it into a storage area. While I was in there, I noticed the blue PEX line running to the backyard hose bib is just dangling. It’s got a brass shut-off valve with one of those red handles and a little bleeder cap, but the whole run thru the space is about 8 feet long and doesn't have a single clamp or bracket on it. It looks pretty sloppy just hanging there against the drywall and studs. I’m concerned that when the water kicks on, it’s going to bang around or eventually start sagging since there is zero support. Do I relly need to go through and strap this down every 32 inches like some people say, or is it okay to just let it be since it’s in a closet now? I'd rather do it right before I start putting shelves in front of it.


You definatly want to strap that line down before you start loading up those shelves. Per the UPC, PEX needs support every **32 inches** for horizontal runs on anything 1 inch or smaller. Leaving an 8-foot span is just asking for trouble, especally for a line leading to a hose bib. Those lines see alot of pressure spikes whenever you're turning the water on and off outside.

If you leave it dangling, it’s going to rattle and bang against the studs every time someone uses the hose. That's called water hammer, and it’s more than just a noisy nuisance. PEX is durable, but if it's constantly vibrating and rubbing against a wooden stud or the edge of a drywall sheet, it can eventually wear thru the wall of the pipe. It might take a few years, but it’s a leak you don't want to deal with later. Plus, a sagging line can trap water, which makes it harder to fully drain the system for the winter.

Grab a pack of plastic **talon clamps** or J-hooks. Avoid using metal plumber’s tape or anything with sharp edges that might bite into the pipe. When you're nailing them in, don't pin the pipe so tight that it’s completly locked down. PEX expands and contracts as it warms up and cools down, so it needs a tiny bit of wiggle room to slide through the hangers without making a ticking or squeaking sound.

As for the exit point, you really want a solid support right before it goes through the exterior wall. If you can, mount a **drop-ear elbow** to a 2x4 block behind the wall. This gives the hose bib a rock-solid anchor so it doesn't move when you're yanking on a garden hose. It keeps all that mechanical stress off the PEX and prevents the pipe from rubbing against the hole in the rim joist.

That makes a lot of sense about the pipe rubbing against the studs. I've heard that 'ticking' sound in my bathroom before and never knew it was just the pipe expanding! Quick question about that bleeder valve though. If I'm adding these brackets every 32 inches, should I be trying to angle the pipe down toward that valve? I’m worried that if I just strap it perfectly level, the water might get trapped in the middle of the 8-foot run when I try to drain it for winter. Is there a specific slope I should aim for so it actualy empties out?

You’ll defintely want to pitch that line toward the bleeder valve. If you strap it perfectly level, you’ll end up with a 'belly' in the pipe that holds water. When winter hits, that trapped water can still freeze and crack a fitting even if the valve is closed. I always aim for a slight slope, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot toward the drain point.

Since you're allready in there, double-check that the shut-off is a full-port ball valve. If it’s an old multi-turn gate valve, they often fail to seal completley over time. It’s a five-minute swap now but a massive headache once those shelves are installed.

Make sure you throw an extra bracket right next to that brass shut-off valve. Those valves are heavy compared to the pipe, and if it's just hanging there, it’ll sag and mess up the slope you're trying to keep for drainage. I usally screw a small block of wood between the studs and strap the valve directly to that if I can.

Since you’re building shelves, definately use a permanent marker to trace the pipe's path on the studs. It’s way too easy to forget exactly where it sits once you start drilling into the wall to mount your shelf rails and accidentally puncture the line.
