Wanting to paint the old previously woodstained summer house. Does anyone know if it's ok to undercoat in a cheap Matt emulsion first to prevent using litres of expensive cuprinol colour paint??

It's not okay to use bottom of the barrel anything, especially concerning a paint-job's longevity. Regardless of expense, you should only buy a product based on actual user's ratings and never solely upon marketing claims. However, switching to Paint from even a Solid Wood Stain is a grave mistake. Stain only fades and doesn't peel, bubble, crack nor ever require removal.
