Woodworking Kits?

My lady friend thinks she wants to take up wood carving as a hobby. Any suggestions as far as tools.

Lee Valley Tools has lots of wood-carving tools -

- big & small powered & manual - supplies - sharpening stuff and everything else. The online product descriptions often have additional info in a link - care & use or whatever.

Some little video teasers as well :

An often overlooked resource - not high profile - is the seniors groups. We have a seniors woodworking and craft center - 10 miles away - that is quite excellent. .. when I last looked into it membership was about $ 125. ... per year < ! >

What sort of wood carving?

I've found Garrett Wade tools to be excellent.

Someone mentioned Lee Valley and they are also good.

Chip carving is a good place to start. You can get by with three knives, learn to work with wood, and sharpen the tools. I really should dig my knives out now that I'm semi-retired and have more time.

Around here you'd start with a Stihl chainsaw and a 5' larch log

Probably not what she has in mind but you can never tell.

Look at Harbor Freight wood chisel set. I have a 6piece from 3 Christmas's ago. Also, get a 12 piece dremmel unit.

Look at it, and leave it on the shelf. Poor quality steel won't hold and edge and can actually be dangerous to use.

This gadget can whittle down a piece of wood quickly. It works a lot faster than using sandpaper.
