Window Screens Too Small

I moved into a new home with windows by "Proview", Series 2005H Vinyl.

I noticed this during the walkthrough that the screens are about 1/4 inch too small, meaning there is a gap between the screen and the window, where bugs could easily climb right through. The sides match okay.

There are two small tabs which turn to hold the window in, and the screen can be shifted slightly, but I don't want to have to fiddle with it just to have it "sit" just right in the window.

I told the builder this and they said that the screens came with the window.

I see the following options...

  1. Put tape or some other type of covering on the top edge.

  1. Replace the screen with one 1/4 inch taller. I would probably have to get a custom screen ordered. It would be a battle to work this with the builder. I suppose I could survey my neighborhood and see if they have the same problems.

Any comments appreciated.

I would tell the builder to get the right screens

Specifically, weather stripping or that brush/broom edging that comes attached to a metal strip for doors. Vinyl changes size a LOT with temperature variations, and if you fill that space with anything rigid, there will be some other temperature at which the window frame will crush your screens.

God help you if it is KB homes.

Keep bitching at the builder. Screens are supposed to deduce the insects in your home. File an written complaint to the home office and the registrar of contractors if you have to. Do not wait, be diligent. The squeaky wheel will be greased.

A co-worker had a similar problem with undersize screens in a new townhome. The builder eventually replaced the screens.

So what. You should not have to suffer because the builder buys substandard (cheap) materials. You expect a screen to keep the bugs out, so if there are gaps bigger than the screen mesh itself, it is a defect.

Thanks for all the posts! The builder definitely needs to replace the screens. I understand the vinyl may expand, but it's a 1/4 inch gap. With the proper size screen there is still enough window left over for expansion.

I plan to get a letter to the builder ASAP.
