Why are long drill bits so hard to find?

For example this 3mm HSS cobalt, 98mm long. Couldn't find a 4mm that length at all!

Surely plenty folk need to drill a hole through something thick before putting a screw right through and into the wood behind?

98mm is under 4 inches. What do you consider short?

Depends on size, thinner are shorter. You can find a few 18" ones here

Just getting into this, at work we had some 1/8 inch bits and a few other sizes up to about 1/2 inch that were about a foot long, some 1/4 and 5/16 inch bits that were about 5 feet long.

The standard length for a 4mm width drill bit tends to be about 60mm. Useless for almost every task.

I've found plenty really long masonry bits that are 10mm thick or more, but thinner ones, like you'd use for pilot holes for screws, are always way too short.

Ah, the phrase "extra long" seems find them. Sometimes search engines are so pernickety.

And I had a 2 1/4" that was 12 feet long - - - - Had to make that one though.

"installer" bits of roughly 18 inch length are COMMON in smaller sizes

-3/16 to 3/8 sort of range - - some with a hole in the web at the tip for attaching a wire or pull cord to pull it through the hole.

I can imagine you to be the sort to have already given yourself a frontal lobotomy.

Why would you need to do that instead of just using pliers to grab it?

I'll give you an example, I'm trying to drill through a conservatory framework (which is 60mm thick) to put a bolt through it to go into the wall. I need 60mm for the cobalt drill to make the hole, plus some extra length as the drill chuck can't get right up against the framework (due to the window framing). And even longer when I want to get into the wall with the masonry bit, having gone through the frame.

Depends what work you do, I always find myself needing to drill a long distance.

Not when I searched for them. I typed long cobalt drill bit into Ebay and it came up with very few options.

Do you have OCD? Stop taking things so literally.

They sell because it's the only length you can get!

It is not bullshit. You have no idea what I do.

What's wrong with typing "long cobalt drill bit" when you want a long cobalt drill bit?

Then why did you take my words too literally if you don't have OCD?

It's damn hard to find long ones.

Depends what you do with them.

The word "long" should give the search engine a clue.

You assumed "almost every task" meant "almost every task".

You assumed "almost every task" meant "almost every task".

The Ebay search engine failed to realise that by long I meant long.

I do.

Anybody selling a long drill bit must surely put long in the title.

I googled long HSS and found lots. Bought some. Very very useful.
