would it be okay to tile directly to a painted wall( using mastic) for a backsplash and not use a backerboard or will the mastic not stick to the painted wall...perhaps if i roughed up the paint with some heavy grit sandpaper? thanks, cj

Flat paint is OK for either mastic or thinset. If the paint isn't flat, apply a coat of primer then tile.
I did mine using mastic on the advice of the guys at the tile company (not big box).
