Thru-Wall Air Conditioner Question

I presently have an old 15,000 btu Friedrich a/c installed in my apartment that I need to replace (I cannot find the model # anywhere on the unit). It is installed through the wall and the sleeve is already in place, measuring approximately 16.25" high and 27.25" wide. The distance from the front of the sleeve to the exterior of the wall is about 20". The problem is I can't seem to find a thru-wall replacement that will fit in the sleeve. Friedrich's current thru-wall models are 17" high and will not fit the sleeve. Can I use a window unit in the sleeve, even though a large portion of the side grills (vents?) will be inside the sleeve? Thanks for any advice or a/c recommendations!!

Why, what's wrong with it??

If the unit can not vent as it was designed, it will not function properly and will quite possibly lead to premature component failure. Blockage or limiting of any of the side louvers will certainly cause problems.

All the thru-the-wall models listed at the following link look to be able to fit into your existing sleeve. Unfortunately the largest is about 12,000 BTUs.

Thanks for the replies. It turns out that the dimensions for the Friedrich replacement were for the front grill only...the chassis that actually goes into the sleeve is a little smaller, and the newer Friedrich thru-wall model (14,700 btu) fits like a glove!
