The American finance executive who created an AI-altered image of herself with three traveling companions wearing "Lake America" sweatshirts is no longer employed by Michigan's Family First Credit Union.
Jane Smith, the bank's now-former CEO, embarked on a trip to Halifax with her family earlier this month. They snapped a photo in the Detroit airport along the way, and Smith later used ChatGPT to make it look like they'd traveled to Canada wearing "Lake America" merch.
At the time, US President Donald Trump had just signed an executive order directing his interior secretary to rename Lake Ontario following a breakdown in trade talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney.
"Like our sweat shirts? Not sure Canada will. Lol lol, " the photo was captioned in a post on Facebook.
Smith apologized after backlash ensued and deleted the image, calling it "a mistake. " She also claimed that the family's Halifax vacation had to be cut short because of death threats. Advertisement
The $96.8-million asset credit union has now released a statement confirming that Smith is no longer with the bank.
"We sincerely apologize for the concern, disappointment and pain this situation has caused our members and community, " the bank added on social media. An interim CEO has been appointed.
