Stud Finder Settings ?

Last stud finder I bought was in the '90s.

I'm now looking at all the stud finders and see that they have five functions, relating to four depth functions, and one looking for AC current function.

They all say to calibrate for the intended use.

Why can't I just set for the deepest depth, and check for a stud, and then set for AC wiring, and check for that?

What about where some drywall is 1/2", and some is 3/4"? What setting would one use?

Why so many depth settings?

TIA

I have a rather new studffinder, that is supposed to go deeper than other earlier ones, but it doesn't have settings iirc. Maybe that's why no one has answered.

It seems to work. I needed it becaue I coudn't find my other two but also because I'm looking for studs behind the bathtub tile, and it had an opinion on where they were.

I haven't drilled holes yet and it's a good thing. I was going to put a grab bar low so I could pulll on it to stand up, but I lost weight and don't have much trouble standing up now. If I lose another 20 pounds, I won't have any trouble at all. Still, eventually I may get feeble and I will probably benefit if I can hold on while I'm standing up, climbing in or out. Entirely different location for the bar.
