some lights on breaker not working

hello all, i had some lights and outlets not working in my house. Checked the breaker, flicked it on and some of the lights cam on and others did'nt. The downstairs lights came on, but upstairs did not. What could cause some to work and others not to?? thanx Steve

Assuming all the lights and outlets in question are on the same circuit: you have an open circuit (loose connection) in the line. It will be located between the last working light or outlet and the first dead light or outlet.

How old is your home? Aluminum wire or push in connections tend to cause a lot of these problems. You almost certainly have a bad connection at an outlet, or maybe a switch.
