None that I know of ... the whole idea of double glazed windows is the thermal break between panes .

Storm windows help but dual pane are better from my experience.

For a single pane to compete you have to change the laws of physics. Maybe Trump will do that in 2024.

It all depends on the thermal conductivity of the material used. So no need to change the laws of physics. Trump in 2024 will have his hand full reversing all the damage to our country since 2020.

Duals leak and are s*it after a few years. Also very expensive to replace. I am wondering if the money saved in heating is wasted on their constant replacement

The problem with storm windows is sealing them - and the primary window - from air infiltration . If you've got air leakage you've got heat loss . An aside - we (well , I did) chose non low-e windows for our house . The reasoning was that we have relatively few windows on the north side , and over half of the south side is windows . I wanted the solar gain from those south facing windows and since the north windows are double glazed the heat loss will be minimal . Those south facing and the west facing windows do make a difference in how comfortable it is in our house .

I wonder how low e single pane windows stack up against dual pane windows?

Besides the insulation value, double panes may contain an invisible metallic layer that keeps heat in and out. New windows on my house are like this and are better than the old crumby dual panes that were even covered by storm windows

I remember the semi annual ritual of substituting screens for storm windows and vice versa in my parent's first farm house. My parents would put some sort of plastic over the whole window area to seal the gaps for the winter.

I only have 3 windows and 2 sliding glass doors in my townhouse.

But the other two windows are 2 sections wide, the aluminum bottom of the window has 4 channel, which is enough for two windows and two storm windows. Two close the storm window for the open side requires removing the screen. I did that for 10 years or so, but it wasn't easy. It required bending and deforming the screen, both to remove and replace, and eventually I bent it. I still used it for another year or two but I got fed up and I haven't put it back in for 20 years or so. I stopped bothering to close the 3-section screen a couple years after I was unable to replace the 2-section screen.

In 20 years, there was one year I got what were probably insect bites (not mosquito bites), maybe 15 bites and they took months to go away .

And there was one year the stink bugs got in. It took all summer to learn to fill a little plastic bottle with soapy water and to push them into the bottle and screw on the cap, then quickly shake it. Most of the stink bugs disappeared on their own by the next summer -- not be cause I killed them -- but 10 years later I still find a few living in stacks of my papers. I don't like that but they don't stink unless you kill them with pressure.

But I also get yearly light shows from fireflies in my bedroom. This past summer, they seemed to be on steroids. The light would go on for 5 or 10 seconds instead of 1 or 2. If it happens again next summer I'll try to find out why.

The biggest problem:

Screens became popular partly because they cut down disease, serious disease, spread by mosquitoes (and other insects??), but those diseases are mostly gone now, certainly in Maryland there are no mosquito-borne diseases.

But that leaves mosquito bites, annoying in themselves. Something happened to me when I was about 21, and I've only had 5 or 6 mosquito bumps since then. And the neighbors tell me there are mosquitoes here. I don't get it, but I'm very happy.

My grandmother always said if ya can't say something nice , shut the f*ck up . If you don't like what he posts , don't read his posts . Probably too simple a solution for a simpleton like you .
