sheet metal repair

Feb 07, 2014 1 Replies

had a wood stove fireplace surround fabricated from 1/16 inch sheet metal and I need to paint it......this piece of bare metal has quite a few scratches, and i'm sure they will look bad if i paint as is.......what is best way to fill scratches??? TIA

Hit it with a metal prep so the paint/primer will adhere well . Then hit it with 2 coats of sandable automotive primer . Let dry per label instructions , sand smooth . If it ain't smooth enough add another coat . ++ They also make a "hi-build" primer that goes on in a thicker layer if your scratches are that deep . Do use a flap wheel on those scratches before you start the coatings , might be some ridges associated with them scratches too .
