Roofing Jobs

As an addon to my thread, Elk Premium Roofing, a more general question. All things considered where would you value the following in the final job satisfaction?

Material? 50%??

Workmanship? 50%??

In short do quality materials factor higher than the expertise of the work crew? Or vice-versa?

Whatever you do, if you live in a humid area or where roofs discolor, buy antifungal shingles.

You really can't devalue either of the two. But if forced to choose, I'd value workmanship over materials by a long way.

Once you select a certain grade of material for your roof, the various manufacturers don't vary that much in quality. So select a good shingle and Elk is a good brand, then don't worry so much about quality.

It is fairly difficult to get bad materials.

The installation (workmanship) is where you get your moneys worth. A good quality installation with a lesser grade of material will last longer than a poor installation of a superior product.

My rating: Material 25% Workmanship 75%

The difference in price between mid-grade and top-of-the-line materials (40 or 50-year shingles vs 25 or 30, heavier felt, premium ice dam protection, etc.) is relatively minor and soon forgotten. Poor quality workmanship lasts a lot longer and can be a lot more expensive in the long run.

One of the sillyist questions i have seen here! Why compromise either? And expensive does not mean better or best. Excellent material and experienced, quality installation should always be demanded and expected.
