PLEASE HELP WITH BRIGGS AND STRATTON ENGINE BACKFIRING AND STALLING.

Jan 28, 2020 3 Replies

i have a brigs and stratton, trimmer lawnmower. When i start it up, engine runs when i back the choke off to idle, but when backed off to run, engine stalls and quits. Put new oil, changed plug, cleaned air filter. Also, it back fires when choke lever is put to run, backfires, then quits.

WHAT GIVES? WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT? CHANGE THE PLUG AGAIN?

It's running lean. The carb needs cleaning. Had one last week on a snow-blower. I put about 4 ounces of Sea Foam in half a tenk (about 1

1/2 US quarts) of gas and ran it with the choke on enough to keep it running for about 20 minutes and it cleared right up. It had been stored all summer with gas in it. If you knew what you were doing you could take the carb apart and physically clean it - but don't bother if you don't have a clue. I know how, and it is still better for me to use the wonder-juice first. Most times I don't have to take them apart at all.

Use ethanol free fuel if you can get it because ethanol also makes the engine run lean - and it is more likely to foul the jets in storage

These days you can buy a new carburetor for about $30 and fix it every time. Mine came with a fuel filter, clamps, shut off valve and some hose.

That works if you get the right carb and IT isn't a defective piece of junk. (Yes, been there, done that, bought the T shirt and wore it out
