The History Channel had a show about the construction of the Empire State Building this am. It talked of men throwing hot rivets to others who caught and fastened them in place. A certain limestone from Indiana is the facade. It had to come from a small area there to be acceptable. There's audio here of two women interviewed after the crash.
Plane hits Empire State Building
Thanks. I lived in NY for 12 years so I knew some of this, but it means I'm also more interested in more about it.
One thing I didn't notice until I was more than 20 is that it's called the Empire STATE Building. But if it were called the EMPIRE State Building, people would know where it got its name, from NYS, the Empire State.
The orignin of that name is not known for sure.
When I try to play this, I just get a video of an ad for a Ford F-150!
Other interesting things: the 3rd link above says the bomber that crashed into it was headed for Newark Airpoort but the 2nd link says LaGuardia. I can't think of a reason anyone would lie, so it seems like an example of how history gets muddled anyyhow.
Even if the cables were cut, how come the brake didn't keep the elevator cage from falling. That's what made Otis famous, his simple design for a brake that works when the cable is disconnected. Before him, aiui there were no high elevators.
Who knew there was a law against Unlawful Parachuting.
I got an ad for insurance. The ad played full screen a few seconds then the thing I wanted showed up. I've noticed this more and more lately. An ad plays, then the content. Sometimes there's a little note at the bottom saying the ad will play X seconds with a little count down clock. An ad pops up full screen on another site I frequent. I have to backtrack then return to what I wanted to see.
No idea why the brakes failed. Otis put them in. The lady survived because the lift cables dropped before the elevator and gave it some sort of a cushion. There was speculation that the air underneath the elevator couldn't escape fast enough to let it fall full speed.
This happened twice, with nothing else afterwards. They showed the same thing each time. It was 2 or 3 minutes long but I watched it t he first time because it was interesting, especially the part about b acking up.
.. No note that the ad will stop playing or way to skip test of t he ad. .. So I loaded the page again from scrach, adn got a short 15-second ad fro the F-150, and I clicked on the link at the bottom opened it a 3rd time, gt the same short ad. Nothing afterwards. I give up. I'll never know what those two women said. bit at least I saw the pictures.
I'm going to try to have those two things when my elevator fails.
Anyone who got caught BASE jumping where they shouldn't.
I always wondered why, out of the thousands of people in the WTC on
9-11, there wasn't one Base jumper with a parachute under his desk waiting for a chance to bail out of his window.Join the Discussion
