Phone Plug Question ?

Hello,

Tried to find something suitable at HD and on Amazon, but couldn't. Am hoping someone could point me to the correct item to purchase, preferably via Amazon.

Have the typical (sort of flat) telephone wire that goes thru the walls connecting two rooms. So, not practical to replace.

The male plug on one end of the wire is defective, and would like to replace it. Plugs are dirt cheap, but all I can find require a crimping tool. Really don't want to spend $ 25 or so for a one-time job.

Are there any male phone plugs (I thing Cat3 is the correct nomenclature) that can be installed on the wire end without having to use a crimp tool ?

You need the crimp tool, but they can be gotten for less than $25. Try Radio Shack. I bought one there years ago, but I think I paid around $7. Probably $10 now, but thats cheap compared to what the phone company charges. Maybe some hardware store rents them too....

A crimp tool is required to do the job properly. You could get a wall jack and solder (or screw depending on the type) the wires from the existing cord to it, but those existing wires are tiny and very difficult to deal with. The cord was designed for a crimped connector. Perhaps you can find a friend who has the proper tool.

Bob,    Buy a phone wire with the plugs installed, cut off one of the plugs with  some wire, and solder. Dave M.

You can do it with a small screwdriver. Strip the jacket off about

1/4", Insert it in the plug so the wires bottom in the holes and push the lock piece until it clicks. Then push down each brass insert flush. Verify the wires are still bottomed in the holes. You may break a plug or two before you get the hang of it.

posted for all of us... This is the voice of experience-when the the crimp tool is "there" and you are here. Probably have more trouble stripping the jacket, some of them stretch more  than a piece of chewing gum. If you have a sharp knife discovery of the  product quality will happen.

They sure went up in price at Radio Shack, but that was probably the 1980s when I bought mine. That is a good price on ebay....

Check ebay for "phone connector crimping tool" They start at about $7.68 plus shipping. Google them.  They are about $18 at the Shack if you can find one.

Some of those cheap crimpers are little better than just using a screwdriver. Also be sure you have an RJ14 crimper (6 wire) if you have RJ14 plugs.
