OT walnut blasting GDI intake valves

The walnut blasting works, but I'm not convinced the carbon buildup has been a significant contributor to Kia / Hyundai engine failures.

Make sure the walnut-blasting technicians have a man bun.

Any idea what causes the _huge_ cloud of smoke events for these engines ? I had one when stomping on it to pass a farm tractor ; my sister in law had a couple prior to her engine failure .. carbon build-up breaking free and jamming a valve momentarily ? ... just a wild guess .. No check engine light ; no lasting noticable effects .. but certainly an Oh Crap moment ! John T.

I'd guess that it's not getting enough air to match the sudden increase in fuel supply resulting in incomplete combustion. Perhaps the air filter needs to be changed or there is a design defect in the engine.

FWIW, there is a DIY spray that I have used on my 2017 Honda Civic. Very simple process.

In my case - I always kept a clean air filter plus I record every fill-up and calculate fuel economy - no changes over the 8 years of ownership - until the engine failure began. John T.

Some of the buildup can be prevented by using Top Tier gas. A few pennies more but better for the engine.

The no name stuff may or may not have the best additives, The gas comes from the same tank at the port and additives are put into the tanker truck.

That's a marketing gimmick. All fuel sold must meet specific standards.

It must meet certain minimum standards. You can add more ingredients than the minimum.

At the Providence RI tank farm, every tanker fills up wit the same grade. Some though, go to another station and put in other additives.

Well, yes, of course. That doesn't mean that the additives actually have any positive effect on your engine, but without them and the hype, the major chains would not be able to justify their higher per-gallon price to the customer. Like my Dad used to say, beer is beer.

You can also do a bit of research about testing to see FACTS or continue to think beer is beer. If you think about it, your dad's statement proves me right. Enjoy your Bud Light.

If it is black smokeI would bet on carbon release.sounds like the old "polish tune up" - little old lady's car - just take it out and floor it to "blow the carbon out" and make it run like new. Never had a car I drove carbon up!!!!

They must all meet MINIMUM standards. Those minimum standards may, or may NOT be adequate - particularly on gdi engines.

Gas isn't necessarily gas though - - - ANd often top tier fuel sells for the same price an the lesser stuff. I can usually buy top tier at several local pumps for less than non-top-tier at several other pumps locally. Shell, Canadian Tire and Costco are all top tier and are generally the lower cost retailers in my end of Waterloo Ont.
