I worked and paid my own way through college too. No student loans, which I though were stupid.
Come to think of it, if I temporarily "identify" as a "snowflake" (I currently identify as a reindeer), can I get the government to reimburse me for my car and my house loans too? No?

Understand that. Just don't expect me to pay for your kids education, especially if it a useless degree.
No one is trying to reduce the cost of education, just whining they spent more than they can afford to pay.

Uhhh, Ed, conservatives have been trying for a while. We are censored by American Pravda, so you would not hear about it.
The problem is that the teachers unions are a major part of the democratic party. Government guarantee of student load was a payoff to the unions. And when that happened, the cost went through the roof and the quality of the education went down (even more). This is clearly political corruption.
Her is what we have been trying to do that you have had censored.
1) rid ourselves of teachers unions
2) vouchers so you can pick the skool you want
3) privatize publik skools. Contract them out. They do not perform, do not renew the contract.
4) get the government out of student loans
Whenever anyone tries to reform it, American Pravda and the democratic part come out of the woodwork to defend their gravy trains. Their only solution is to throw more money at it.
Oh, if you have not noticed, those state that spend the least on education, have the best results. It is not a coincidence.

The University of Michigan is undertaking $2 billion in construction right now. Only some of it is on the athletic campus. Here's the new dorm complex:

A lot of the construction is at the medical center. That's _extremely_ expensive space.

Latin and Greek are useless. Chinese and Spanish would be a better use of their time.
I was graduated from high school almost 50 years ago. There was instruction in neither Latin nor Greek.

Do tell - Since you are so knowledgeable about it.

Those are bargain basement prices.

$57100/yr tuition plus $2600 for books and fees if you cut expenses by living under the Green Island bridge. It was $2000 for tuition in the mid-60s and books ran around $200 iirc.
And now for the real kicker. In the '60s it traded places with MIT and CalTech at the head of the rankings. Now it's tied with Leheigh and Purdue at #51. At least it beats the Basketweavers of Florida State. Barely. It's got one hell of a performing arts center now rather than a WWII leftover near the Armory.

I can only speak for my alma mater. The $2000/yr tuition I paid in the '60s should be $20000 adjusted for inflation, not the $60000 for tuition/ books/fees. The ranking went from among the top 3 to tied for #51. Unless it's changed the only sport anybody cared about was hockey and I think the team still plays in the old field house built in the '40s.
Before she retired, the president was the highest paid private school president in the country.
Something went off the rails.

Yeah, well, RPI had a remedial English class in the '60s. There is some truth in 'Yesterday I cudunt spel injuneer now I are one'.

About 60 years ago I was reading the Gallic Wars in the original. The shop and business kids took Spanish and typing which would have been a lot more useful. I still can't type and my Spanish is suitable for starting barroom brawls.
It seems quaint that at the time the Catholic High kids would argue with us about the proper pronunciation of a dead language. The other oddity is the only black teacher in the school taught Latin. I got the feeling if he were alive Mr. Gibson wouldn't care much for BLM.

Is there a payback form that or is it a complete loss leader? There is a Medical School, right?

59 years ago. I took 3 years of Latin I guess because my older brother had extolled it a bit.
The 4th year was Virgil, poetry. Savages like me don't appreciate poetry, so I took auto shop. My mother didn't object at all.
The school didn't teach Greek.
Veni, widi, vici, y'all.

What you say is correct and I am just saying that government participation has made it far worse.

I had two years of high school Latin and think Latin and Greek are useful as they are the genesis of a lot of technical and medical terminology.
I also had two years of high school French and three years of college German.
Thinking back I had more use of these languages than I did for college calculus even though I worked in R&D.

Since college educated people make more in lifetime earnings the government paying for their education is subsidizing the rich. I am sure for your postings that you would oppose that.

Amo, amas, amat to you too. Had two years of Latin. Spanish would have served me much better.

You remind me that the best course in English I took was a brief one my management sent us too when we started work. Formal English teachers want you to be erudite and flowery in your prose. This course acquainted us with the Gunning Fog Index and how to be concise in getting your point across.

Or as paraphrased by Madame Pantsuit, 'we came, we saw, he died' as she chortled over the destabilization of Libya.

I think my style was improved by one of our 'tech writers'. All she ever did was cut'n'paste the fix notes into the documentation so I learned to write coherent notes.
I have worked with real tech writers that can translate engineer into English but she wasn't one of them.

Yes, there's a med school. The tuition is high, the instructors are highly compensated, but I'm sure the patients do their part to keep the university's books in the black. A metric boatload of research also brings in the bucks.
