The tv story I saw was apparently a bit misleading. It's "Mysteries of the Unknown". (S1,E18) A plane hauling two nuke bombs lost a wing and crashed. The tv story made it sound as if only a couple toggle switches stood between safety and disaster.
Sort of harsh but Clinton was governor of Arkansas at the time. Turning Little Rock into a glow in the dark crater would have eliminated a lot of future problems.
There have been quite a few incidents they don't like talking about but theoretically the bomb detonators are pretty secure. That still doesn't stop the plutonium from getting scattered around if the case ruptures or just one of the explosive charges goes off.
