There was a bit of a cattle drive in southwest Nebraska a few days ago. The state patrol stopped traffic on a highway for awhile. A flat bed truck with hay led the parade to bribe the cattle. The video showed 3 guys on horses to keep an eye on things. I couldn't find a link of the tv report. Mushroom wasn't there with his chow wagon. (Rawhide tv show)

Why are they moving cattle in winter?
My dad used to put cattle in the field to pick up whatever his John Deere 227 mounted corn picker left behind. I'd like to think modern equipment is a lot better but there will be some left behind. A corn plant might drop an ear prematurely or the stalk is broken so the combine doesn't grab it. The owner possibly thinks that particular field has been picked clean. More likely is the days of that herds relative freedom are over. Calving time is generally in March or April. The animals are at the age when it's time for them to go to a feedlot where they get fattened up with an enhanced diet to turn them into steak more quickly.
I like Rawhide. The shows had good plots and they weren't simple or the outcome obvious.
