OT bad O2 sensors?

OT

If a car doesnt' start, can you tell that its O2 sensors are no good?

If all 4 O2 sensors are no good, is that enough to keep a car, some car, from starting?

Hypothetical

You could read the codes and see if codes are set for the sensors. That would be an indication, but it could still be bad wiring, etc.

No, but I suppose it's possible there could be some screwy car made in Belarus or someplace that works like that.

Reality: yes. For some _very small, very minscule_ number of vehicles.

Very roughly 20 years ago there were some trucks [a] that were designed so that... if some of the EPA mandated and other sensors gave ugly readings, the vehicle would not start.

This garbage ended prety quickly.

[a] I was involved with EMS ambulances that were built on various truck chasis. I seem to recall Ford F-250 but could easily be misremembering the specific models.

It's possible (I had no personal experience with any) that some cars had similar stupidity.

Anyway, Ford provided us with a "defeat" switch so that if the EPA'ed "do not start" function activated, we could manually override it.

Very good of Ford.

Thanks all. This was another Pipple's Court, where a shade-tree mechanic claimed it woudlnt' start because the owner didnt' pay for new

02 sensors. He had said what he would do and he didnt' a very good job on that stuff either.
