Grass string trimmer innovation, use your own string?

Aug 05, 2012 2 Replies

Has anybody tried wire instead of string? Maybe insulated, maybe not? I would guess that store-bought string is the best material for the job, but you never know. Obviously cost is an issue, so they might sell something that's cheaper but it might require more restringing, since it doesn't last as long as something else might. Apparently there are nylon blades that can replace the string. Anything homemade?

Just curious.

You do not want to use wire or anything like that. When the wire breaks off small pieces, they get in your legs and eyes.

Really should wear eye protection anyway as the small rocks and other pieces fly all over the place.

Whatever you decide to try, make sure the pieces that fly off will not cut into you like small bullets.

there was a adapter that converted some gas string trimmers to a wire like metal cable spinners. electric units werent powerful enough to use the conversion kit.......

the metal pieces lasted forever, but could damage things like wood doorframes
