Gas Log Valve Problem

I had gas logs installed in my wood burning fireplace several years ago. Peterson 24". The logs were provided by and installation was done by Forshaw of St Louis. It's a see-thru fireplace. We also changed the doors at the same time.

Log fire looks great...........but there's a problem. The logs were instaled in 2/00.

On 11/29/01...the valve "froze".....would not close. Needed to turn off from outside near the gas meter. I would judge us to be moderate users. Forshaw came and replaced the valve - no charge

On 1/3/03.....the valve "froze" again.......same as last time. Forshaw came and replaced the valve - no charge.

On 2/13/04........the valve has again "frozen".

It seems to me that there must be some sort of problem here that is causing the valve to "dry out" or something, that causes it to not be able to close..when it is hot. I can close the valve....with effort........after the fireplace has cooled.

Have any ideas on how to solve this problem?

Lets see....what brand of gas valve is it?

Now..around here, if the home does not have gas logs installed at time of the original mechanical permit, meaning, when built as new, we have to pull permits and follow the International Gas Fuel Pipe Code, and that states that you have to have a regulator at the unit, AND a secondary shut off valve, AND a drip leg.... If you dont, no inspector will pass it.

Nothing in the new valves will dry out. Did they install a drip leg for bad/dirty gas lines? I would be willing to bet you have particles clogging the valve.

Are you sure it is really a "gas" valve?
