Level on the wall?? If it is programmable (as I think I remember OP said), it is unlikely to have a mercury bead and is almost certain to be solid state. Tilt shouldn't affect function. It's been many decades since I saw a programmable thermostat with a motor driven analog clock on the front.
Another thought - if the furnace is modern enough to have a circuit board controller (probably 92% or more efficient), there may be neon or LED indicators on the board to indicate various malfunctions. Worth the
5 or 10 minutes to pop off the rear cover of the furnace and look for them. There's probably a schematic or other instruction sheet either on the inside of the rear cover or another obvious location to help if you can't locate the owner's manual in a drawer or on line.I bought a Honeywell RTH7600D1030/E1 Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat

I don't think "Kenmore" has ever made anything. It's a Sears brand and they had in made by one or more of the major appliance manufacturers. Kind of like a "Westinghouse" TV. It has no manufacturing behind it, it's just a company with some offices that bought the rights to the name. The TV is built by some volume, cheap manufacturer in China or similar.
Chevrolet makes cars and trucks. Kenmore buys labels that go on appliance made by Whirlpool, LG, etc. Kenmore manufactures nothing. No factory, no tooling.

OMG! Cleaning the "flame sense" rod resolved my furnace problem. Now my furnace is working (i.e., the room temp is now above freezing!).
The cost of a pad of steel wool was much less than calling a HVAC technician who would try to sell me a new furnace for a gazillion bucks.
