Floating/reparing shower pan floor

i am rebuilding a botched shower floor tile installation. i need to refloat the shower pan if necessary but i don't have alot of clearance, especially around the drain. i need to know how thin i can float deck mud/dry mud. Can i go less than a quarter inch?
