What do you think about a contractor who refuses to give you referencesuntil you sign the contract? I had the "Affordable Co." come out togive me a bid on replacement windows, and while she talked for about ahalf hour on how great they are, when asked if we could get somereferrals and go look at their work, she refused saying that it'sagainst their policy, and it's to protect their customers privacy, BUTif we sign the contract and become one of the "Affordable Co" family,they will provide us with referrals, we have 3 days to cancel. We saidno thank you.

In many, but not all, jurisdictions, contracts signed in a customer's home can be repudiated within ten days; a way to protect consumers against slick door to door types.

Another thought is to check with the BBB and contractors state board to see how many if any complaints they have. It would not be hard for a shyster company to give you the name of 3 of his buddies or relatives.

Rumor has it, there are more than one contractor in the real world. They might like your money more to make you a satified customer.
