Cat in the furnace

Another look into my life=======================A couple weeks ago, a firned of mine had a kitten which fell into theheater duct. She called the fire department, who came out and took theduct apart. And left it in pieces. I got to put it back together.Well, she called again. Thinks a different cat went downt he duct(from second floor bathroom, no less). I'm out the door to rescue thecat. ths time without fail we screw some covers over the duct, tocover the vent. Or maybe staple some screen or something like that.======================Figuring this was another one of the same, I took apart the same ductI'd put back together the last time. No signs of cat, in the seveninch round duct. I followed that back to the furnace, there was apatch piece of metal over where there used to be a humidifier. So, Istarted to take that apart. I looked in as best possible, no cat. Wentout to the truck and got my miror, and used that to look into the heatexchanger, and back through the duct. No cat.Gwen asked if the cat might be in the heater. Not likely, but I didpull the cover panel off. No cat by the burners. I pulled the lowerpanel, which exposed the circuit board, and the blower fan. Look inwith my mini mag, and surprise!Cat looking back at me.... and blast, I didn't have my camera with me.That was a total Kodak moment.I talked to the cat for a moment, and Gwen came over. She was pleasedthe cat was still alive. She reached in, and pulled the cat out. Theywent upstairs to get the cat a drink of water, and some to eat.I put the furnace covers back on, and also the duct back together. I'dbrought some screen wire to staple over the vents. And screwed shut apart of the vent that was open, in the back. Hope not to do thisagain.

She's not at all mechanically minded. She did try to cover the outlets with cardboard and duct tape, though.

Just to make sure I'm really clear about this - her heat vents were uncovered, and she somehow thought this was normal? How is that possible??? I mean, that should've been fixed within 2 days of moving into the house?

Why were there no covers?

I have had birds in the hot water tank flue, chimney cap added.

found a dead mouse once its tail stuck between 2 pieces of romex, apparently it had gotten stuck...

mice in the house, chipmunk in the kitchen, bat in house, wildlife intrudes occasionally.....

Possum got into the garage while I was away; must have got stuck between two file cabinets -- smelled so horrible I didn't dare remove the -- uh-- you don't want to know - called the animal shelter; they came out and removed it. I can't get out of my mind what an awful, slow death that poor animal went through.
