thermal expansion tanks--how long do they last?

a plumber told me we need to replace our "thermal expansion tank". how long do these usually last?

It depends. I thought mine needed to be replaced in just 3-years. But, it just lost its air-charge, which is not a good sign. So, I pumped it back up to 7-psi and never had the problem again, yet. That was 23-years ago. If you're seeing frequent replacements, then your relief valve(s) may need replacement or more regular usage...their seals dry and get stuck shut if not periodically freed.
