I was pulling some measurements for a new shelf setup today and noticed a small black diamond shape sitting right at the 19 3/16 mark. It’s definately not one of the standard stud marks that I'm used to seeing at every 16 inches, and it's not the red foot markers either. It just seems like a random spot to put a symbol unless there's a specific building code or something I'm missing out on. I've seen them further down the tape too, always at that same wierd interval. I usally stick to the basics when I'm framing, so maybe this is for some kind of specialized structural work or engineered materials? If it’s meant for a certain type of joist spacing I’d love to know before I start my next big project. It feels like one of those things every pro knows but nobody ever explains to the DIY crowd.

Those black diamonds are spaced at exactly **19.2 inches**, and they’re essentially a layout shortcut for engineered floor joists or trusses. While most people are used to the 16-inch marks for studs, the 19.2 spacing is a clever way to divide an 8-foot sheet of plywood or OSB into five equal spans. If you do the math, 19.2 times five equals 96 inches, wich is exactly eight feet. It’s the middle ground between the standard 16-inch and 24-inch centers. I usually see these used in floor systems where builders are trying to save on material costs without sacrificing too much stiffness. By spacing joists at 19.2 inches instead of 16, you’re using fewer pieces of lumber over a long run, but you still get a much more solid feel than you’d get with 24-inch centers. The edges of your 4x8 sheet goods will still land perfectly in the center of a joist every time, provided you’re pulling from the same edge. In my expirience, they aren't used much for standard wall framing unless it's a very specific engineered spec. If you're just putting up shelves or a basic partition, you can ignore them. But if you’re framing a floor with **TJI joists**, those diamonds make the layout go alot faster. You just hook your tape and mark every diamond instead of doing the mental math for every 19.2-inch increment. Just be careful not to confuse them with the red "stud" marks if you're working tired. I've seen guys start a layout on the 16s and accidentally drift onto a diamond mark halfway down a long wall. That’s a fast way to make sure your drywall or sheathing never lines up. Stick to one set of marks for the whole project and you'll be fine.
That explains why my last shed floor felt a bit bouncy even though I thought I was being precise. I acutally grabbed my tape just now to check and found them exactly where you said. Since these are for floor joists, does that mean I'd need to buy special insulation too? I ussually just see the batts sized for 16 or 24 inch gaps at the store. If I used this 19.2 spacing, whould I be stuck cutting every single piece of fiberglass by hand? That sounds like a total headache for a DIYer.
You hit the nail on the head with the insulation issue. You're definatly going to be stuck cutting down 24-inch batts, and let me tell you, that gets old real fast. It’s one of those things where the lumber savings look good on paper, but the secondary costs like extra labor and wasted insulation start to add up.
Most guys I know only use that spacing for unconditioned spaces or if they're blowing in cellulose. If you're doing a DIY project and want to keep it simple, just stick to the 16-inch marks and save yourself the frustration of custom-fitting every single piece of fiberglass.
Another thing to watch out for is that some cheap tapes acutally skip these or have them slightly off-center. If you're doing a big floor, buy a decent FatMax or somthing similar so you aren't fighting the tool. I once worked with a guy who tried to use that spacing for a ceiling and the drywallers almost walked off the job. It saves lumber, sure, but it makes every other trade's life a nightmare becasue nothing is where they expect it to be.
I tried using that 19.2 spacing for a composite deck last year. It’s a bit of a gamble if your lumber isn't perfectly straight. Since the joist is only 1.5 inches wide, you've only got about 3/4 of an inch for two board ends to meet. If your tape isn't held tight or you mark the wrong side of the diamond, you'll miss the edge entirely by the time you reach the third or fourth span. I ended up going back to 16 inches for the peace of mind. Those diamonds are precise, but they leave zero room for error compared to the standard layout.
